Athletic fields at Stanley Middle School taking shape

The new athletic fields at Stanley Middle School are rapidly being completed.

In a type of “flip flop”, the fields are being constructed on ground where the “old” Stanley Middle buildings once stood. When the “new” school was created on the site of the “old” school’s fields, the former school site was designated for the new fields.

The new athletic site features a football and soccer field, baseball diamond, nice aluminum bleachers, a paved running track, a concession stand, a press box, restrooms, and a storage building. Last week saw workers putting up fencing, continuing to grade the soil, and laying down sod on the football field.

Finishing touches were also being made to the school’s new entrance on Hovis Rd. A new sidewalk will let students go from the main school building to their rides or walking route.

As far as exactly when sports will take place on the new site, Huffstetler said that also is dependent on the weather.

“There’s no final date,” she said. “Until everything is checked out and ready our plan A is to still enjoy the kindness of the Town of Stanley, N. Belmont Park, Kiser Elementary, Springfield Elementary, and East Gaston High who let us use their fields.”

It’s been a long road from the days when the former Stanley Middle School was reduced to rubble to the new and gleaming school and athletic facilities that have been built over the last couple of years, but Huffstetler is proud of the transformation.

“All of us have been eyewitness to a neat thing in our community,” she said.
